Unknown rebel finally marked with tombstone at Spotsylvania
Confederate Army Cpl William Thomas Harwell known as Willie is now memorialized 117 years after his death from a Wilderness skirmish wound. His remains were reinterred in Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery in 1868 after an earlier unmarked grave. The search effort, started by his mother and later by descendants, culminated in placing a headstone in honor of Willie in the cemetery’s Alabama section amid questions of proof.
