House kills gas rationing amid California shortage

The House rejected President Carter’s standby gas rationing plan by a 246 to 159 vote, while California faces worsening shortages and extended gas lines. Only Ohio's Don Pease supported the plan. Davis-Besse near miss sparks China Syndrome fears

The Davis-Besse reactor faced an unrecognized danger when two emergency cooling pumps were deemed inoperable between January 3 and January 4. A NRC report to be released by Toledo Edison warns the condition may have persisted longer, risking loss of primary coolant and a potential meltdown.

Handling With Care At South Amherst High School

A Wednes­day Chronicle-Telegram report notes a volatile chemical found in a South Amherst High School classroom linked to an explosive. The emergency reactor cooling system was tested in December 1978 and again in January with a frozen water line causing a low flow to the pump. the line thawed by 11 a.m. Jan. 5, during which the reactor remained critical and the plant produced electricity.

Tycoon Eaton dies at 95 after storied career

Cyrus Eaton, renowned industrialist and peace advocate, died at his Northfield estate at age 95 after a long career spanning multiple eras in American history and foreign policy. His death came as his family noted natural causes after years of declining health, with private funeral plans in Nova Scotia.

CHALTA approves new two year pact in diocese talks

CHALTA backed a two year contract for Cleveland Diocese lay teachers after a strike ending mid April. Beginning pay would rise to 9450 and reach 10200 in year two with eight to nine percent raises and a wage reopener clause if inflation climbs. The agreement, reached Tuesday under mediator Harold Gold, covers 245 members across 10 diocesan high schools in Cuyahoga Lorain Lake and Summit counties.
