In Fort Lauderdale Florida 75 year old Roswell Gilbert was convicted of first degree murder for shooting his wife Emily 73 in a mercy killing to end her pain from Alzheimer's and osteoporosis. The jury spared the death penalty and sentenced him to life with a 25 year mandatory term, prompting an appeal plan. The courtroom heard that Gilbert claimed compassion while witnesses described her years of suffering and pleas for death.
