Massive Rock Fall Shakes Elyria Sparing Homes

A hundreds of tons of rock slid from a cliff into the Black River valley near 234 Washington Avenue, shattering land and shaking homes on Washington Avenue and nearby apartments. NoMissing persons reports followed, though residents feared for children nearby as more rocks tumbled after the main fall. Local history notes the event as Elyria’s largest rock fall in almost seven decades, echoing a 1870s slide remembered by C. C. Lord.

Police Sergeant Arthur L. Hurd to Retire on Pension

Police Sergeant Arthur L. Hurd 67 announced retirement from Elyria police on June 23 1940 contingent on pension approval. City of Lorain Sued Over $50,000 Injury Claim

Tom Haber, a Lorain boy, sues the City of Lorain for 50000 alleging he fell at Oakwood Park pool on August 29 1939. His father Joseph filed the petition claiming a clinker and mossy cement base caused the fall and infection that required months in hospital and impaired growth of his left leg.

Adolf Hitler announced that Norwegian war prisoners may return home. The Fuehrer said in an order of the day that Norwegian soldiers who were captured will be permitted to go back to their homes.

Four Indicted In Alleged Huge Fraud

Four men including Howard C. Hopson former head of the Associated Gas and Electric Co. system were indicted by a Federal Grand Jury on mail fraud and conspiracy charges for defrauding investors of more than 20 million dollars. 84 More Citizens Admitted By Lorain Common Pleas

Common Pleas Judge D A Cook admitted 84 more alien residents of Lorain county to citizenship, bringing two day totals to 195. Denials numbered seven, with three continued and one dismissed. Spectacular Blast In New York City

A massive explosion near the Park Central Hotel in New York City hurled steam, water and debris skyward. A 25 year old model Connie Renault suffered severe burns and possible fractures and was hospitalized at Roosevelt. The Cocoanut Grove nightclub on the 26th floor was crowded at the time.

Lorain Woman Sentenced For Shoplifting Ring Ties

Ellen Mrosko, 29, of Lorain, pleaded guilty to petit larceny after being caught with shoes at J C Penney. Police link her to a northern Ohio shoplifting ring. She received 30 days in county jail and a $100 fine plus costs. Officers found numerous items at her home and questioned her husband.

Two From Lorain County Lead Kent Tests

Two Lorain County students led Kent district tests with first place wins. Norma Wolcott of La Grange earned top ninth year English with 144 points and A Frederick Portman of Henrietta won first in eleventh year English with 166 points.

Germans Claim Huge British Transport Sunk

Berlin reports German air forces sunk a 7,000 ton Allied transport off Narvik Norway and an Allied submarine in the Skagerrak. It says the troop ship fell to a medium bomb while Narvik pursuit planes joined ground forces against enemy troops and batteries.

Robert Kirk 21 of Middlefield died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after his car rolled over five times on a curve near Chestnut Ridge road at 10 40 p m two other occupants were injured. Deputies said the trio planned to reach Elyria to buy something when the vehicle lost control near the city east boundary. Two British Subs Reported Overdue

London May 9 the admiralty today listed six officers and 35 men missing with the Sterlet and five officers and 48 men missing with the Tarpon. The missing include Lieut Commander G H S Hawma and Lieut Commander S J Caldwell. The Tarpon and Sterlet were apparently sunk in the Kattegat in the early days of the Norwegian campaign.

Four Year Old Boy Injured In Traffic Accident

Roberts Wallace Smith, age 4, son of Malcolm Smith of 110 Princeton Avenue, was treated at Elvira Memorial Hospital for head and facial contusions after a traffic accident on East Avenue near Fourth Street. The vehicle was driven by Pete Diedrick of 20 West Avenue. Police reported the boy was crossing East Avenue from east to west and had wandered from home before the incident.
