Lorain county's voting population grew by 11 yesterday as 11 residents were admitted to US citizenship by Common Pleas Judge D A Cook. About 100 more applicants will undergo hearings today.
The Grafton Township Board of Education last night employed two teachers to fill four vacancies in Belden school's elementary staff next year. The new teachers are Miss Helen Molnar of Lorain and Miss Wilemene Mole of Grafton. Molnar is completing a four year course at Kent State University, while Mole is a Kent State graduate and currently teaching grades five and six in Huntington township.
Weather conditions reflect little pressure change this morning. Barometers run higher than normal except in the southwest. Temperature changes are unimportant and seasonable weather covers the United States. Showers and thunderstorms observed from northern Ohio and the lower lake region west to the upper Mississippi Valley and central plains. Ohio mostly cloudy with scattered showers in the northeast tonight and the south Thursday, cooler in the south Thursday.
Webb Miller, noted United Press war correspondent, was found dead beside a railway track near Clapham Junction in southwest London. He was 48 and believed to have fallen from a train after covering the Norway debate in the House of Commons. Miller is survived by his wife Marie and son Kenneth, 18. He previously covered Finland’s front lines and the Mexican border, rising to European manager for United Press.
William Wickens Lorain County assistant prosecutor urged more volunteers for probationary work with youths in trouble, at the Elyria WCTU annual meeting. Mrs Anna Kennedy welcomed 30 new members and 12 honorary members after a luncheon, as Susan Hinman announced a May 15 executive meeting and round table at the Elyria First Methodist Church. He cited rising crime and claimed the United States leads in lawlessness, urging attention to legal reform and respectful compliance with the law.
Governor Harlan Bushfield secures the GOP gubernatorial nomination on the economy record platform. Lewis Bicknell wins the Democratic nomination, with partial returns showing Bushfield ahead 58 635 to 15 981 and Bicknell 21 012 to 14 143 for Steensland. Eight convention votes remain undecided among Farley backers.
Twenty four Elyria High School students were tapped for the National Honor Society in the first ceremony of its kind at the school. Inductees were selected from 31 seniors and seven juniors, with 24 honored during the assembly.
Five trustees were reelected and three new members chosen for three year terms. Veterans H. K. Day Richard Elliott Mayor Joseph Q Petro R. A. Timms and W. B. Timms stayed on the board joining eight others elected last year and eight two years ago. New trustees are Paul R. Hines Paul F. Coniam and Dr BR S Wilson. Wayne Listerman of the FBI warned youths crime costs and home responsibility.
At the 21st annual District Advisory Council meeting in Oberlin two seats on the Lorain County Board of Health were filled. Dr W R Morrison of Oberlin won re election plus Walter Nord of Amherst secured the second seat after a tie vote and a second ballot. Petitions urging women on the board were presented and read.
Amsterdam reports precautionary military measures across the country. Leaves of all fighting forces are cancelled and anti air units recalled to duty. Public buildings are guarded and vessels barred from strategic waters as Berlin and Paris acknowledge no immediate threat.
Ely, 62, former Wisconsin teacher and city chemist, died suddenly at home in Ridgeville Ohio. Born Fayette One in 1817 he studied at Oberlin and Chicago University, worked as a teacher, chemist, Scout leader, and in medical and auditor roles. Survived by wife Etta, son James, two daughters, a granddaughter, mother Tamar Ely, and sister Elsie M. Ely. Funeral at Ridgeville Congregational Church Friday at 3 p.m. Burial in Ridgeville Cemetery. Body at Nichols funeral home until service.
