Lorain County faces growing Hispanic communities with 7 percent of residents tracing ancestry to Spanish-speaking regions per the 2000 census. Departments in Minnesota and Kentucky start bilingual training at community colleges to handle rising Spanish speaking residents and job growth.
The 18-year-old Bradley Babbitt with Avon Lake and Sheffield-Sheffield Lake School ties died after a three hour standoff with Lakewood police. Police say he fired on officers during negotiations and a SWAT response ended with his death by gunshot. The coroner ruled the death a homicide. Funeral service set for 11 a.m. at Busch Funeral Home Avon Lake.
Lorain County Community College and South Shore Development Corp. pursue a partnership with a nationally known culinary arts school to open at St. Joseph Community Center this fall if about 5.5 million in bridge financing can be raised. Officials anticipate 300 plus students by year two and see urban redevelopment benefits.
The Ohio governor contest may hinge on turnout with Democrat Ted Strickland and Republican Kenneth Blackwell relying on party GOTV networks and outside groups. MoveOn.org and Rev. Rod Parsley linked groups helped mobilize voters in 2004, and similar activity resurfaces this fall. Blackwell’s primary victory benefited from a conservative coalition boosting turnout, while moderates were more likely to stay home.
Lillian Gertrud Asplund, age 99, the last American Titanic survivor with memories of the 1912 sinking, died at her home in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, after boarding the ship in Southampton with her mother Selma and brothers. The family returned to Worcester from Sweden. Her father and two brothers perished.
