A Wellington youth died in a car crash as fires and storms sweep across the U S and Canada. The report notes widespread destruction from large fires in Rimouski Quebec and multiple other incidents with injuries and property loss across several states and provinces.
The Elyria Chronicle Telegram received a merit certificate from the American Newspaper Publishers Association and the International Circulation Managers Association for operating its motor vehicles 113,438 miles during 1949 without an accident. In 1949, 389 newspapers enrolled and logged 112,000,000 miles with a final rate of 2.1 accidents per 100,000 vehicle miles.
Elyria Board of Education meets at 7 30 PM for the regular May session to discuss hiring several new Elyria public school teachers and a fine to meet with architects for final approval of the Franklin school building plans.

The ninth district court of appeals opened a three day session with Judge Charles A. Guernsey substituting for ill Judge Perry Stevens to hear arguments in nine cases from common pleas court. One case involves Ohio Public Works Department's land appropriation suit against William G. Schaeffer over Beaver Park property valued at $185,000 after a $63,000 offer. Also note leave of absence for county clerk H Agate reports illness in Alma Miller's family.
The Rev Alexander S Carlson of ToledoPilgrim Congregational Church will keynote the Ninety Eighth Annual Meeting of the Ohio Conference of Congregational Christian Churches in Toledo. He will deliver the conference sermon Our Protestant Witness at the opening worship service Tuesday at 430 p m. Carlson a Oberlin College graduate 1921 1926 ordained 1926 has served Plymouth Huron Mason City and Toledo and has led Toledo Council of Churches this year. D M Oldfather of Cleveland will preside at the business session and Dr Everett A Babcock will conduct the memorial communion service.
Five persons were arrested by police over the weekend on charges of driving while under the influence of liquor. Vernon Pratt of 414 West 13th street was fined 75 dollars and costs and had his Elyria license suspended six months after arraignment before Mayor Henry W. Ault. Pratt was arrested on West avenue at 8:55 p.m. yesterday. Joseph Krystof of 134 Oak street was similarly sentenced for the offense Saturday night, arrested on Lodi street. Alex Bates of 529 Irondale street was arrested at 11 p.m. Saturday on West River street after his car collided with a parked car owned by Dwight Knepper of 436 Jefferson street. Bates is to be arraigned next Saturday. William J. Beeler of Lakewood was arrested Saturday night on Court street for driving while under the influence and to be arraigned May 13. Joseph Rattay of Cleveland, riding with Beeler, is to be arraigned May 13 for intoxication. William Pitcock Jr. of 139 Purdue avenue was arrested Saturday evening on Lake avenue for driving while under the influence and to be arraigned next Saturday.
Paris reports France seeks U S financial and material help in waging the $500.9 million annual campaign against Communist led rebels in Indo China. Foreign Minister Schuman met Acheson as Western Foreign Ministers opened talks to check communism with plans for Viet Nam independence.
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek urged sanctions against Russia in a press conference with visiting U. S. correspondents. He warned of a new world war in Asia unless democracies aid Nationalists to drive Communism from China. He called for UN support and emphasized U. S. aid without deploying American troops.
One hundred participants including children joined the Cleveland Museum of Natural History for the fourth bird walk in Ely Woods on Sunday. Thirty seven species were identified, with vivid sightings of Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Scarlet Tanager, Hooded Warbler, Nashville Warbler, and Wood Thrush among others. Two more walks are planned, the next on May 14 at 7 15 AM, with gathering at the picnic ground inside the park entrance on Washington avenue.
Homer N. McConkey Ohio Retail Grocers Association will speak at 8 p m at AMVETS Hall 400 East Broad Street The Elyria Retail Food Dealers Association sponsors the meeting inviting all Elyria Lorain area dealers to attend He will discuss modern operation and merchandising in the food business.
Local dairymen urge residents not to discard empty milk bottles during rubbish pickups. Howard Parton of Elyria Dairies notes bottles cost six to seven cents each in carload lots, even more in small quantities, and dairies will collect bottles to reuse.
Dr William Kerstetter philosophy professor Baldwin Wallace Berea will speak at the Elyria Red Cross annual meeting Thursday evening at the YMCA The speaker also serves at Union Methodist church in Cleveland and has worked with Cleveland welfare groups The meeting begins at 8 p m and the public is invited.
Funeral services for Alfred P J O Donnell 70 prominent Elyria wallpaper and paint store owner will be held Tuesday at 10:30 from the O Donnell home 402 Middle avenue and 11 a m from St Marys church. Rev George E Eppley will assist. Burial in St Marys cemetery. O Donnell president of O Donnell Paint and Wall Paper Company died Saturday after a long illness. Born February 22 1880 in Granard Longford Ireland he came to the United States with his family in 189? and settled first in Columbus Ohio then Norwalk before moving to Elyria in 1896. He organized the Lincoln Park Allotment and was a real estate investor in Elyria Lorain and Cleveland. He was a member of St Marys church Knights of Columbus Holy Name Society and Elyria Elks Lodge. He retired in 1945 while his sons Edward Bernard Alfred and other family remained active. Continued on Page 2
President Truman marked his 66th birthday during a Midwest train tour stopping in Chicago and Galesburg Illinois. He accepted cheers from reporters and passengers as officials noted the next months could determine whether there will be a third world war depending on U S foreign policy. The trip featured cakes sent by well-wishers and a brisk walk amid a crowd of reporters and security detail.
Four youths were in an automobile that missed a curve and overturned into a ditch two miles north of Ashland on Route 58. Howard A. Lowther, 15, of Wellington, died at Ashland Hospital after a severed artery and loss of blood. Surviving relatives and funeral arrangements are noted. the other three injured, John W. Bradstock, 16, Leona Schoenberger 17, and Shirley Swope 14, treated at Ashland Hospital.
Rudolph R. Mezlak 22 of Lorain died from brain injuries after his car struck a light pole on Memorial Shoreway N W in Edgewater Park. Fellow Lorain residents Neil Place 28 and Frances Place 23 were injured. Place suffered skull fracture concussion and broken ankle while Frances Place was treated for bruises and released. Police say Mezlak lost control near a curve 100 feet west of the New York Central overpass. car crossed lanes and snapped a municipal light pole 250 feet away before stopping.
Gas escaping from a ruptured six inch underground main of Ohio Fuel Gas Company caused a grass fire on the New York Central railroad right of way between Chestnut Street and West Avenue. Fire crews fought the blaze with booster and regular hose for about 30 minutes until the gas firm neutralized the threat. No residents were affected and service was restored by mid afternoon after a 20 foot pipe section was repaired. A watchman remains at the site.
