Cold snap devastates Avon fruit crops and likely losses

Record low temperatures for the third straight day wiped out most grapes and peaches in Avon. Ed Schober, a local grape grower, called the crop a total loss with only possible buds remaining. Yanks Enter Saigon Fight In New Battle

American tanks and armored carriers joined the Saigon combat, sealing off a Viet Cong attack from the southwest on day three of fierce fighting near the city. Troops had fought outside Saigon since February, sweeping enemy units threatening the capital and northern South Vietnam.

France ready to mediate Viet talks says Pompidou

Paris UPI reports President de Gaulle's government would mediate if needed in the Viet talks. Pompidou said France does not wish to interfere but would help if problems arose. Talks open Friday with US and North Vietnam delegations assembling in Paris. Both sides began briefings as entrenched positions set to be tested. The Dien Bien Phu anniversary noted as a backdrop to the negotiations.
