Air Line Pilots Set to Strike Tonight
About 1,000 pilots and co pilots of Continental and Western Air planned a strike tonight, canceling all domestic and overseas flights on their 28,000 mile network. AFL president David Rehincke said only a presidentially appointed emergency board could avert it under the Harfway Later Act, with no indication of federal intervention. The union seeks wage increases from 13.00 to 16.00 daily and shorter hours, plus other benefits. Some pilots on newer vessels were eligible for top pay.
