A very severe earthquake in the South Pacific was recorded by Fordham University officials in New York. Shocks were logged at 1:39:52 a.m. and 1:42:49 a.m. EDT, with lesser tremors around 6 a.m. The epicenter was likely between New Guinea and the West Indies, about 1,700 miles from New York.
Five sailors face charges over an alleged sabotage attempt aboard the Japanese cruiser Sakawa en route from Japan. Firemen Larry W. Ladale and Stanley Bere, Seamen Robert J. Eby Landsdown and Lloyd B. Faulkner, and Seaman William Lambright Jr. Palestein were named as suspects.
