McMillen Oil Brings New Gas Well in Columbia Township

The McMillen Oil and Gas Company brought in a second gas well on the George Allen farm in Columbia Township with a daily flow of 94 000 cubic feet after shot today. The site is near a 5 300 000 cubic foot well completed March 12 on the same farm. About 25 residents of Elyria own interests in the new well. Plans are under way for another well on a different McMillen lease. This marks the fifth producer drilled by the company in the past year.

Midwest Citizens Alarm Over Kidnappings

A flood of kidnapings across the Midwest has spurred citizen defenses from Staunton Illinois to Missouri Indiana Wisconsin and St Louis. Wealthy captives paid large ransoms with hundreds of thousands reported though exact sums are uncertain. Notable cases include James Hackett of Blue Island whose wife allegedly paid 159000 for his release and Dr Isaac D Kelley held a week with reports of a 100900 ransom.

National Tube 10 Fete Retires Employees Dinner Planned

Men who retired from the Lorain Plant of National Tube Company on May 1 will be guests of honor at a dinner at the Hotel Antlers next Tuesday. About 69 persons are expected to attend. An entertainment program of vaudeville acts and orchestra music will accompany the dinner.

MT. PLEASANT O May 7 The entire student body of Mt Pleasant High School marched out in protest after the school board refused to re employ William Patterson as superintendent. More than 100 students paraded through the streets in demonstration.

Sheet and Tin Mill Workers to Get Wage Increase

Youngstown Ohio May 7 Sheet and tin mill workers in the steel industry will receive a wage increase during May and June for the first time in nearly two years. Wages are computed by the average selling prices of sheets in the two preceding months. The March and April average was 2.65 cents per pound, about 15 percent above base and 12 percent above the last sheet sale. Announcement came from the Western Sheet and Tin Plate Manufacturers Association and the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel and Tin Workers.

Hardware merchant’s contract canceled over relocation breach

Batavia hardware merchant Patterson faced contract termination after failing to move to Mt. Pleasant as required by the board. Demonstrations occurred outside the homes of board members as part of the dispute, reflecting mounting tensions over the dispute and its fallout.

Notices Of Changes In Vote Booths For Election

The local board of election is preparing notices for about 1,000 voters who must use different voting booths due to recent changes in city precincts and wards. Deputy clerk Miss Mary Seward said notices will be mailed in late July.

Avery on trial for first degree murder in Lambert death

In Sandusky on May 7 a motion to dismiss first degree murder charges against Karl B H Avery surfaced as the prosecution closed its case in the Lam bert death case. Testimony described Lambert’s wounds and fear after Dec 6 1930 with threats to quit paying attentions to Mrs Avery.

Elyriangaow Shrine Convention Plans in Cleveland

The Elyriangow Shrine Convention Committee met in Cleveland to discuss financing for the International Shrine convention in Cleveland July 14 to 16. Mayor James A. Hewitt and Horace H. Nye attended. The gathering will unite Shrine representatives from across the United States and Canada. Most entertainment is planned for the new Cleveland Stadium, Hewitt said.

Health contest results highlight Blue Ribbon gains in county schools

South Amherst wins the Chronicle Telegram Health Cup for Class A, with Brown helm in second and a 1 percent pupil gain to Blue Ribbon status. Murray Ridge takes Class B, first time winner. Pittsfield No. 7 and Holy Trinity show notable improvements. Markley leads Class A gain at 33.3 percent, Ridgeville 32.5 percent, while Middle Ridge in Class B posts a 16.4 percent rise. Total Blue Ribbon pupils reach 1638 countywide.

Dredge Trimont Sinks After Collision With New York

A motor dredge Trimont sank in Long Island Sound after colliding with the coasting steamer New York of Eastern Steamship Lines one mile west of Race Rock Island. Five crew members were rescued, three were missing and presumed drowned as Coast Guard vessels searched for bodies in heavy rain and mist. The New York, outbound for Boston, was undamaged and headed to New York after the collision. The Trimont, a 124 ton dredge owned by Trimont Dredging Co of Boston, had been working off New London, Conn. Authorities said the crew was larger than usual.

Commissioners Hear Assessments and Road Claims Today

County commissioners will hold a hearing at 1 P M on assessments and claims related to Pitts road in Wellington township and Chamberlain road in Grafton township. Bids to remodel two rooms on the courthouse third floor for the sanitary engineering department, now in the basement, are due tomorrow at 1 P M.

Locomotive overturns kill two railroad workers near Chicago

Chicago May 7. Frank Crews, 30, a Wabash railroad fireman, was killed and Matthew O Heir, 50, an engineer, fatally injured when their locomotive overturned after hitting a string of box cars south of Chicago late yesterday.

Death of famed British flyer H R D Waghorn in crash

Flight Lieutenant H R D Waghorn died at Cambridge Military Hospital after injuries from a parachute jump during a test flight near Aldershot. He and civilian test pilot E R D Alexander were aloft in a two seated bomber when the plane failed, forcing a parachute landing that left Waghorn with a fractured thigh and a broken ankle. Waghorn helped pioneer aviation during the Schneider Cup era and was renowned for his speed records with the Supermarine Rolls-Royce. He underwent surgery and authorities noted his long service with Britain’s elite airmen. Continue on Page 2.

Doctor McIntosh Named Rockefeller Foundation Assistant Director

Dr William A McIntosh former Lorain County health commissioner has been appointed assistant director of the United States Rockefeller Foundation based in New York City. He previously led Lorain County Health Department and later worked with the Foundation in Siam and Michigan health projects. He is son in law of Dr A S Mechitrick of this city.

Reappraisal of Lorain County Real Estate Delayed

Deputy Auditor Monroe H. Welty said Lorain County real estate reappraisal will take months. Begun in April, it aims for completion by December but requires about 50 outside appraisers and six record staff. Fire Leaves 1,000 Homeless in Yamanka Japan

About 3,509 residents of Yamanka were left homeless after a blaze swept through the city, destroying more than half of its buildings. Dozens dead or injured, with 1,304 structures burned including a railroad station, post office, schools, and hotels.
