Keeping Them Off Streets 1.7 Million Youths Get Summer Jobs
Washington reports more than 1.7 million youths, mainly teens from low income families, will have federally supported summer jobs this year. The $1 billion program aims to provide work for over 90 percent of disadvantaged youths in the labor market, with pay at least the federal minimum wage of 3.10 dollars per hour. Labor Secretary Ray Marshall calls it a key step against economic disadvantage and for gaining work experience. Eligible youths include those on cash welfare, families of four earning 7 200 to 12 500 annually, or those in sheltered programs or with substantial handicap.
