Area churches announce aims and schedules for the week with gospel jamborees, family days, fundraising dinners, estate planning seminars, youth services, revivals, and guest speakers. Highlights include Derrick Roberts Ensemble from Toledo, Indonesian aid drives, and a Lorain district meeting with Elder R. E. Taylor.
Nineteen men selected as Holy Name Man of the Year by county societies at the Lorain Deanery Holy Name Society awards banquet. Recipients include Elyria John Pluto, James Fada. North Ridgeville Charles Bashak. Grafton Paul Whitman. Oberlin Robert Diedrick. Lorain Joseph Evanish. Avon Lake Dan Harndem. St. Jude and St. Stanislaus groups among others. About 450 attended the 17th annual banquet at Tom's Country Place in Avon.
Serbian Church of Sheffield Village will honor its patron saint Krsna Slava with a 10 a.m. liturgy led by Rev. Zivorad Georgevich, assisted by visiting clergy. Miloje Milosevich Choir will sing responses. kolach and koljivo blessing at 1:30 p.m. precedes a banquet of barbequed lamb and suckling. Banquet sponsors are Bosko Yurosevich and George Georgevich of Lorain, with a 3 p.m. dance by Continental Strings Tamburitza of Cleveland. High school graduates will be honored. Mane Ralich of Lorain is master of ceremonies.
Broadway Assembly hosts a two day seminar sponsored by World Literature Crusade of Los Angeles. Dr. Jack McAlister describes the program as teaching how prayer aided world evangelism and how to pray for over 200 countries. Tuition is 25 or 20 if registered a week ahead. Sessions run May 12 from 7 to 10 p.m. and May 13 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Broadway Assembly of Lorain.
Defiance College will run 20 two day workshops July 24 through August 5 for lay and professional church workers. Jo Anne Conard and Gerry Haff will lead sessions on Christian education methods and open education. Fees range 24 to 30 dollars with campus housing available and a July 10 registration deadline.
Cuyahoga County juvenile court Judge Leodis Harris will address the Federated Men's Club of Elyria at the May 17 dinner meeting. The 6:30 p.m. event at St. Paul United Church of Christ is open to area men. Tickets cost $5 and reservations are via Lou Szanyi or Nate Williams.
Rev. Alexander C. Meakin of Parma South Presbyterian Church is among seven nominees for moderator of the 190th United Presbyterian General Assembly to be held May 16 to 24 in San Diego. Endorsed by the Presbytery of Western Reserve, Meakin is a Cleveland native and Oberlin-educated leader involved in the church’s administrative and civic activities.
