Incumbents and newcomers lead in multiple races across the district. Charles A. Mosher and John M. Ryan top statewide and local tallies, with Cort s and Weeks clearing their respective Senate seats and several county posts showing shifts in leadership.
Avon voters reject sewer bond and levy measures while Elyria and Firelands schools face defeats. Lorain and Cuyahoga areas report contested races for commissioner and court nominations. Midview and Vermilion districts pass some levies, others fail. State races see Democratic nominations and GOP battles across districts.
In Ohio the upsets favored Metzenbaum over Glenn for the Democratic nomination and Taft over Rhodes for the Republican nomination. Unofficial totals show Metzenbaum 427,294 and Glenn 414,848 with Taft 467,896 and Rhodes 464,701. Metzenbaum praised Ohioans for choosing a straight talker while Taft carried urban and some rural votes. Glenn’s concession followed vote counting. Rhodes and Taft’s race remained unresolved.
Voters in the Elvira School District rejected a 75 mill levy that would raise about 15 million dollars. The tally showed 3,161 for and 5,539 against with four wards voting more than two to one against. School officials face budget gaps for the 1971 year and potential program curtailment or a special election.
Sanford Slutzker, chair of the citizens committee, says voters faced a climate of no as both mental health and mental retardation levies failed countywide. The five year five mill for mental health lost by 14 441 to 14 804, and the retardation levy failed more decisively.
