McGovern gains in Ohio andLorain County leads to standoff

Partial returns show George McGovern leading for district delegates in the 13th Congressional District with 18 603 to Humphrey 14 434 Muskie 3 783 and Jackson 3 256. McGovern also tops the slate of at large delegates in Lorain County while Humphrey trails and statewide tallies place Humphrey ahead for 80 delegates to 50 for McGovern though votes remain incomplete.

Former UMW Local Leader Pleads Guilty to Three Murders

Silous Huddleston 63, former United Mine Workers local president in Tennessee, pleaded guilty to three counts of murder in the killings of dissident leader Joseph Yablonski, his wife, and daughter on December 31 1969. He switched from not guilty to guilty in a second court appearance before Judge Charles Sweet while lingering illness from mining black lung affected him.

Mental health levy defeat threatens Lorain County programs

Lorain County faces an immediate phase-out of mental health and retardation programs after the 1 mill levy failed by 17 990 to 15 449 votes. Board president Sanford Slutzker warned funds will not cover more than a month, and county commissioners have offered no emergency money. The levy would have split funds between the mental health and retardation boards, funding core services like community mental health and the Nord Center, with state matching contingent on local dollars.

New levies and bonds rejected by voters in Lorain County

Voters in Lorain County rejected new levies and bonds in yesterday's primary while renewal levies in place were approved. Winners included the Lorain County Community College 1.2 mill renewal levy and two local school district levies along with several city levy renewals. Losers featured the mental health and retardation five year levy countywide and Elyria's 0.5 mill recreation levy plus three other operating and improvement levies across cities.

Mosher Wins GOP Nomination Over Kenyon in 13th District

U. S. representative Charles A. Mosher of Oberlin defeated Daniel E. Kenyon of Strongsville for the Republican nomination in the 13th District. Mosher, seeking his seventh term, was declared winner in yesterday’s race.

Elyria parks levy fails again in ward three lead

Unofficial results show 4215 to 3642 defeat for a five year capital improvements levy funding two new recreation centers in Elyria. Only ward three supported it as officials weigh next steps and consider notes borrowing or delaying projects amid repeated voter rejection.
