Moon meteorite reveals new iron silicide mineral hapkeite
University of Tennessee physicist Lawrence Taylor reports online in PNAS that a lunar meteorite fragment from Oman 2000 contains a new mineral named hapkeite, a iron silicide formed by fast nano-scale iron grains in lunar soil. The finding confirms decades of predictions by Hapke and Hopke about space weathering and vaporization of lunar material.
