Tornadoes raked from the Texas Panhandle to central Illinois killing at least 15 people. Destruction centered in Texas with damages around 1 million dollars as homes, barns, and wells were toppled. Towns including Frankston and Oakland reported fatalities and extensive damage while roads and communications were disrupted across Missouri and Illinois.
Elyrians recognize a familiar scene at the May show of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The landscape titled Road to Coon Hollow was taken about a mile south of Le Porte on Cool Hollow road by Henry P Bourton, former editor of the Euurta Evening Telegram. The camera, a Gundlach Cornea with extensions, was owned by Alan Tasman then passed to S H Boynton of Lake Avenue and later returned. Bourton’s print is one of three accepted for the exhibit and reflects Elyria ties retained by Bourton despite long Cleveland residence.
CLACTON-ON-SEA England May 1 Village officials announced seven persons were killed and more than 100 injured when a German Heinkel bombing plane crashed into an apartment house. Four crew and three civilians died as the plane exploded its eight 300 pound bombs creating a great crater. About 50 houses damaged or destroyed.

Rothe, Elyria resident, previously worked for the American Shipbuilding Co. and has two daughters and a son.
Rome reports United States Ambassador William Phillips told Premier Benito Mussolini that no sudden change will occur in Italy's war stance. Tension rose over a potential move to join Germany as the British Admiralty ordered ships in transit to avoid the Mediterranean until further notice.
Stockholm May 1 Allied and Norwegian forces repulsed German troops moving north from Steinkjer wiping out two patrols and killing 23 Germans, the Social Demokraten front correspondent reported today.

If not revived, the measure would have barred federal grants to state agencies whose employees engaged in pernicious political activity. Rep John J Dempsey said he would initiate a petition to force the bill out of committee.
