A Cleveland State University study of Lorain County shows Black and Hispanic residents remain scarce in Elyria Township and 17 other townships. The slow migration reflects limited opportunities and fewer supportive networks outside cities, though minority numbers inch upward while white residents decline overall. The overall white population decreased by 462 from 1980 to 1990.

Iowa set to launch riverboat gambling on April 1

Iowa authorities prepare three riverboat casinos along the Mississippi offering slot machines gaming tables live music buffets and shops. Cruises run from Dubuque Davenport Bettendorf and other ports from April to October with dockside play allowed November through March.

Pittsburgher aimed to win big with Iowa riverboat gamble

John E. Connelly, Pittsburgh riverboat magnate and owner of the President Riverboat Casino in Davenport, expects a surge of high-rolling patrons as riverboat gambling begins on April 1 along the Mississippi. Connelly, long a hospitality and riverboat operator, says the extra entertainment will accompany established dining and tours. He built the Gateway Clipper fleet in Pittsburgh, now runs eight boats, and operates the Gateway Riverboat fleet in St Louis, with prior operations in New York sold in 1988.
