Elyria native James Francis Creagan 56 a deputy chief of mission at the U S Embassy in Rome was named ambassador to Honduras by President Clinton. His nomination goes to the Senate for confirmation and he previously served as consul general in Sao Paulo and political counselor in Brasilia.

Lorain Schools Win Major Desegregation Funds Windfall

Lorain School Board announces an 8 7.9 million windfall from state desegregation funds and back taxes from USS Kobe Steel. The total includes 2.4 million in 1996 1997 desegregation funds and 3.1 million from Kobe Steel. Treasurer James Estle will leave for Brunswick Schools. Board members plan to use the funds for desegregation programs including magnet schools while considering Estle's replacement.

Arson Ruled Cause Of Downtown Restaurant Fire

The State Fire Marshal ruled an arson caused the blaze that destroyed Nader's Family Restaurant at 886 Main St and an attached house in downtown Grafton. Police say there are no suspects, and Mayor Shaun Kerner says investigators will continue probing without releasing further details.

A 12 year old boy adjudicated on reported incident and attempted incident charges was removed from Eastgate Elementary after a suspension for a pupil conduct violation. Superintendent Lester Schultz said the student will receive education elsewhere or at home, and emphasized safety and both sides’ needs in the decision.
