Radiation leak at Three Mile Island alarms nearby residents

A cooling plant malfunction at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant released radioactive steam. NRC reports some radiation detected up to 16 miles away and in Harrisburg. Officials fear long term health risks, especially radioactive iodine. About 60 workers were on duty and up to eight may have received 0.5 to 1 rem. Page A-4.

Callaghan Sets Britain Election Date May 3

Prime Minister James Callaghan ordered general elections for May 3 after a one vote no confidence defeat. He informed Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace following a Cabinet meeting, choosing a vote between Labour and Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives for the next five years.

Amin flees Kampala as Tanzanian invasion nears

Amin escapes the Ugandan capital as advancing Tanzanian troops push toward Kampala. Elyria Board approves 7.1% raises for staff retroactive

Elyria Ohio educators receive a 7.1 percent pay increase retroactive to the 1978 79 year for teachers and administrators excluding the treasurer plus raises for central office leaders including Supt Showalter and other associates. Non certified staff get no raise while OAPSE negotiations begin. Board adjourns to tonight to consider appropriations and leases.

Arson Firemen Battle Blazes At Two Boston Hotels

Fires set by arsonists at the Copley Plaza and Sheraton Boston Hotel forced about 1,800 guests to flee. The blazes caused at least a million dollars in damage, with 64 people hospitalized and many treated for smoke inhalation. No deaths were reported.

Ex Indian Lake Easter slain outside Euclid bank

Former Cleveland Indians first baseman Luke Easter, 58, was shot and killed outside a Euclid bank during a police chase of two bank robbery suspects. The suspects fled the scene but were cornered in Cleveland and wounded by police.

Weather outlook calls for showers and cooler night

Suit targets Fisher Foods and First National markets

A $20 million lawsuit filed by Meyer Goldberg Super Markets against Fisher Foods Inc and First National Supermarkets Pick-N-Pay and Edwards Food Warehouse is challenged by a defendant. Goldberg Sues Over Unfair Competition and Price Fixing

Meyer Goldberg, operator of six Lorain County stores, files in U S District Court Cleveland seeking a jury trial amid allegations of unfair competition since 1977 and price fixing by Fisher and First National. The suit seeks at least 4 million dollars, triple damages for federal violations, double for state violations, plus fees and interest.

Lorain County Food Fight Alleged Monopolization Bid

A filed suit accuses First National Stores and Fishers' Fazio's units of price fixing to monopolize Lorain County food sales. It claims a conspiracy to destroy Goldberg's chain, restraint of interstate commerce, and artificial price manipulation funded by profits from other states. Goldberg pledges to keep lower prices locally than in nearby Cuyahoga County.
