Elyria Red Cross drive chairman Herb Meister warns the campaign for 30000 dollars now faces a possible shortfall of about a third. Only 20000 dollars is in sight and more contributions are needed amid strong demand for Red Cross services.
Dr. Harold Robinson, city health commissioner, announced that all communicable diseases must be reported to the city health department. He clarified that no permit is needed for children returning after three day measles or mumps, but permits are required in other cases including regular measles, whooping cough, and chickenpox.
Peggy Jean Chechuck five and a half year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael Chechuck of 126 Homercourt was found suffering convulsions early this morning Dr L Sullivan reported pneumonia developed after measles led to the attack Firemen Briggs and W L Meschke arrived at 640 a m with inhalation equipment and gave oxygen alternately for nearly two hours until the convulsions ceased

Ottawa crash survivor Master Sgt. Gwynne Long said the right wing exploded in a quick fire as the C D7 transport burned at about 3 000 feet. He reported ordering an escape, but passengers hesitated and did not jump. Investigators cited port engine trouble and not sabotage, noting the craft took off from Ottawa at 3 20 a m and crashed on a snow covered farm. Long, 25, from Vanney North Carolina, jumped before the wreckage and injured his knee.
Newark report says William Cummings age 23 his wife 22 and William Bentsen 20 all Denison University students were rescued after their sailboat capsized in Buckeye Lake. They clung to the hull for about a half hour before highway patrolman George Latrel conservation officer Carl Gray and two volunteers pulled them from the rough waters.
In Washington the House economy bloc and administration forces each claimed victory on the foreign aid bill after first round voting. Rep. Lawrence H. Smith Wisconsin urged a $250 million cut in Marshall Plan funds while Rep. Percy Priest noted the rejection of a $500 million slash and opposition to using up to $1 billion in government surplus farm products. The measure, subject to final roll call, would fund roughly $3.125 billion for the third year of the Marshall Plan, with continued aid to Korea and refugees in Palestine.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson and top aides met with the Senate Foreign Relations committee behind closed doors to bolster bipartisan foreign policy amid Republican criticism of Far East policy. Attending were Philip Jessup, W. Walton Butterworth, Dean Rusk, and former Senator John Sherman Cooper. The talks aimed to reassure bipartisan backing for Southeast Asia strategy and a broader world policy review ahead of the London big three talks.
The Elyria Traffic Club, a new function of the Elyria Chamber of Commerce, was formed after adopting a constitution and by laws. Harry N. Beiter was elected first president with E A Francis as vice president and Norris Ryder as secretary. Six governors joined the officers, including Emil A Struck and Joseph Emerich. The club aims to foster closer ties among transportation users and carriers across rail, water, highway and air. Regular meetings are set for the 2nd Tuesday monthly, with a one time April exemption for a Chamber Community Dinner on April 19. Charter memberships are open until the dinner. A Board of Governors meeting is set for next Wednesday April 5 at the Chamber offices.
New York officials claim to deploy a new plan to induce rainfall over the Catskills watershed. Dr Wallace E Howell described as the city's $100 a day rainmaker led a cloud-seeding effort with dry ice from two police planes but found blue sky and sun.
A twin engine C-47 crashed and burned 25 miles east of Nagoya, killing three crew members and injuring one. The Fifth US Air Force announced today, with two officers and an enlisted man among the dead. Names were not released pending kin notification.
Johnnie Richards 12, son of Mr and Mrs Theodore Richards, was hit by a southbound car driven by Mrs Baxter of Mansfield around 345 pm on Route 58 one mile north of Sullivan after stepping from a school bus. He was thrown 20 feet, suffered a severe concussion and head lacerations, and was taken to Samaritan Hospital where he remained unconscious until the following night. Investigating officers include Ashland County Sheriff M F Rickenbrod and the State Highway Patrol.
Miss Janet Bell a 13 year old Elyria High sophomore of 1258 East Avenue was released from Elyria Memorial Hospital after treatment for severe injuries from a February 27 head on crash on Russia Road near Elyria. Seven injured in the collision included a 16 year old Oberlin youth who drove the car carrying Bell and two other Elyria High students. the crash claimed an Elyria infant’s life. Bell’s condition had been listed as fair and improved during convalescence at home, hospital authorities said.
Lorain County Child Welfare seeks a boarding home for a nine year old physically handicapped boy to allow him to attend the school for handicapped children. His parents live in Rie lwalk and arrangements in Elyria last September placed him with a local family for special classes at Gates School. The department reports that due to changing circumstances the family can no longer provide care and asks any suitable family to contact the welfare office at 2067.
Rain swelled the Ohio River to 27.7 feet today and rising at about one tenth of a foot per hour. Officials forecast a crest near 30 to 32 feet by nightfall, with flood stage set at 32 feet.
In London both Britain and West Germany rejected Winston Churchills proposal that Germans aid in defending western Europe. Churchill spoke in the Commons yesterday launching the debate on foreign affairs. Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin ended the debate for the Labour government warning that rearming Germans would delay European unity.
Columbus governor Frank Lausche will attend the Geauga County Maple Festival in Chardon on Saturday, he said today. The visit underscores state interest in regional agricultural celebrations and community events.
Senate Republicans pressed to cite President Truman for contempt if he defies a subpena on government loyalty files. White House aides expect no action, as Democrats control the chamber. Subpenas target Acheson McGrath and Mitchell as Truman orders loyalty reviews to proceed.
The Lorain County Board of Elections plans to ask county commissioners to purchase four additional voting machines before the primary. They already approved adding three precincts Homewood Allotment in Lorain Wellington Village Eaton Township and Sheffield Township. With the new precinct, total machines will cover 13 precincts as registrations rise to 1 172 and a heavy turnout is anticipated due to zoning considerations. The commissioners will advertise the purchase and seek bids for the extra machines.

In a narrow Commons tally 198 to 80, Labour rebels opposed the government over the exile of Bamangwato Chief Seretse Khama and his wife Ruth Williams though the motion to end debate passed.
