Governors Charges On Relief Denied By Ohio Officials

In Columbus Ohio March 28 three former and current relief officials testified before the legislative relief investigating committee denying Governor Daveys charges that federal authorities dominated the state relief program. William Walls said cooperation existed and that money and rules came from the federal side while Frank Henderson and C C Stillman supported the joint control setup and noted pressure from various groups during their terms. Walls lauded Stillman and gave recommendations made before the federal administrator took over.

Relief officials grilled over county relief disparities

A congressional inquiry into Ohio relief programs questions why family allowances vary by county and whether federal rules constrain state administrators. Federal witnesses defend autonomy, noting they do not set local caseworker qualifications or relief amounts and will withhold some case records as privileged. The committee plans further hearings next week to conclude this week’s session.
