Rebate craze drives shoppers to Elyria stores
Elyria Lorain County residents joined nationwide shoppers in applying for Energy Star rebates funded by 11 million dollars in federal stimulus money. About 90 000 rebates ranged from 100 to 250 dollars for refrigerators dishwashers washing machines gas water heaters and electric pump water heaters. Stewart's Appliances in Elyria reported heavy customer traffic as buyers sought discount appliances including a Maytag dishwasher. Channel 5 WEWS covered the event with staff on site.

East River Street project to start Monday
The East River Street widening runs from East Broad Street to the city line. Contractor Mr. Excavator will cut trees in curb lanes as Ohio Edison relocates 45 power poles. Water mains will be replaced, hydrants installed, and traffic kept open with a projected Nov 30 completion. Residents may face delays and can call the city Engineer's Office at 440 326 1444.

Lorain electrical inspector David Velez pleaded not guilty to bribery falsification and receiving improper compensation tied to a 2007 home inspection for a landlord and offering repairs on his own time.
