National Home Week Observance Dates Set

National Home Week will be celebrated coast to coast in September 1926 with thousands of new homes on display in major cities. The NAHB, led by President R. G. Hughes, predicts a Parade of Homes and millions will participate to showcase home ownership benefits and the latest building ideas. The effort anticipates close to 100 million dollars worth of homes exhibited, with plans for TV and radio shows as well as involvement from mayors and governors.

Modern Air Conditioning in Homes of the Past

The article explains that many homes labeled air conditioned rely on prewar furnaces with a blower to circulate air. True air conditioning requires cooling and humidifying equipment, plus dedicated systems, which are costly for small houses. An attic fan is another popular, cheaper method to move hot air and pull cooler basement air through the home.

Concrete Flooring O.K. In Basementless Homes

The use of concrete floor slabs in basementless houses does not detract from the beauty of the floor design. Flagstones set into concrete, asphalt tile, or other flooring materials are popular methods for finishing floors. Properly insulated concrete floors stay warm and dry and carpeting can be laid over them without mildew risk.

The Barson is a roomy modern one story home with five rooms or six by enclosing the porch and garage. Painted Bricks Keep House Cooler and Dry

Scientific testing shows painted brick structures run cooler and repel humidity better than unpainted walls. Painting improves appearance and helps prevent moisture seepage and deterioration. Some clear waterproof coatings also block water while keeping the brick’s normal look. Various coatings are sold to plant dealers and are easy to apply.

Women Will Welcome Full-Length Mirror

Women welcome a long length mirror and a place for it in every home. A door is an ideal fit, allowing a mirror to be placed directly over the door. A wooden moulding with a groove fits the mirror edge and any carpenter can install it.

Colored Fixtures Dominate Modern Bathroom Plans

The National Association of Home Builders Chicago expo highlights colored plumbing fixtures in pink blue green yellow suntan ivory and gray with white as standard. Exhibits show two complete baths in ten feet square with three rooms and private simultaneous use, plus new compact water closet lavatory and square corner tub.

Wood paneling rising as popular 1954 decorating theme

The article notes a surge in wood wall panels to match flush doors, with over 40 million flush doors in use and growing. Hardwood plywood provides door faces and wall panels in birch, gum, mahogany, maple, oak, and walnut. Panels offer beauty, durability, and added home value, with easy DIY installation and low maintenance.

Replenishing a Linen Closet With Style and Purpose

An old custom urges brides to build a silver service and a robust linen wardrobe for family ease. Stock up with plastic mats, fine hand made napkins, and reserve linens. Include matching bridge sets, four table service cloths, and a versatile buffet cloth. Personalize linen with monograms or lace edging for a lasting, elegant touch.

Color Scheme For Picture Window

Large light admitting picture windows invite bold color planning with sunshine flooding the room. Deep cool colors like blues and greens work well, while too much warm red and yellow orange should be used sparingly. White reflects light and should be employed judiciously.
