Bendix Sues Union Over Early Contract Cancellation
Bendix-Westinghouse Automotive Air Brake Co sues United Auto Workers Local 971 in federal court claiming the union violated the contract by canceling it on April 22 instead of July 15. The plant employs about 1,000 workers in Elyria. The union says the company violated the contract, noted by a Labor Department finding under the Fair Labor Standards Act regarding wage and lunch-period discrepancies for female workers. The company seeks a court ruling on contract cancellation and damages if a strike occurs, as bargaining talks resume Thursday with aims to raise wages effective April 22.
