Snowbound Chicago Sees 7000 Residents Marooned

Chaos from 14.7 inch snowfall paralyzed the city. Four deaths reported as vehicles and trains halted by fierce drifts. Lake Michigan lashed shorelines, wrecking seawalls and halting ferries. Forecasters warned of record-breaking accumulations but eased as the storm moved away.

Prohibition Cut Death Rate Says Former Congressman

John J. Lentz told the House Judiciary Committee that prohibition lowered the union’s death rate. He cited a survey of 77 insurance companies from 1914 to 1919 showing actual to expected mortality around 60 to 63 percent, rising to 95 percent during the influenza epidemic. Church Aids In Employment Campaign

The First Congregational Church has joined a campaign to aid employment. Men began building coal bins in the basement and plans were made to perform plumbing and spouting work immediately. Originally scheduled for September, church officials took action to bring the work forward to help remove the employment situation.

City opens full operation of new sewage disposal plant

The complete treatment plant on Gulf road began full operation this morning after months of phased use. It now channels sewage through screen chambers grit basins primary settling tanks aerating tanks door clarifiers sludge digestion tanks and drying beds. Sludge beds are tested for fertilizer value with 75 acres of grounds to be graded and seeded, lauding the plant as a landmark in modern sewage engineering valued at 750000 dollars. Spring Vacation In Elyria Schools Begins Friday

Elyria schools will start spring vacation Friday afternoon for a week, with classes resuming Monday morning April 7. Lorain County schools will not take a spring break, continuing next week as usual. The move follows Superintendent R P Vaughn and R Masson reasoning that an Easter break would disrupt the semester balance. Joseph Lautner of North Ridge Road was fined $5 and costs for failing to send his sixteen year old son to school.

Local High School Not Affected By New Library Ruling

North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools adopted strict library rules requiring full time trained librarians in larger schools and college graduates for part time library duties. Elyria High School already meets the demand with Miss Margaret Scam Abrerian serving as librarian in her third year. The association also urged Ohio schools to spend at least one dollar per student on libraries, a figure Elyria may meet given recent renovations and new book purchases. Other Lorain County members include Lorain and Oberlin High Schools.

Bad Weather Halts Planes At Mt Clemens Michigan

Bad weather stopped a flight from taking off for Sacramento after Major Ralph Royce led 22 pursuit planes back to Selfridge Field from Mount Clemens. Two transport planes that started earlier did not return. The group planned mimic war maneuvers at Chanute Field the next day. Income tax collections from March 4 to 24 totalled 532,548,716 dollars, about 24 million less than the same period last year, with the month’s total near 550 million versus 601 million in 1928.

Adoption of Classification Amendment Drives Tax Proposals
