Fruehauf to close Avon Lake plant by June 1

Fruehauf Corp announces the Avon Lake trailer plant will close by June 1 after years of layoffs. Maintenance and hourly labor costs are high, with plans to shift production to eight other plants. The service warehouse will stay open and officials say steps will be taken to ease the impact on the area. About 760 hourly and 210 salaried workers are employed there.

Abbe Scout Cabin Destroyed by Fire in Mystery

A log cabin used by Elvira scouts and youth groups since 1931 was destroyed by fire at 800 Abbe Rd. Firemen arrived after 5 30 pm and no damage estimate was available. Firecause unknown though nearby workers reported children playing around the cabin yesterday. A partial air traffic controller walkout caused flight slowdowns nationwide, hitting Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Fire destroys cabin used by Elyria scouts near Midway Mall

A small cabin built by the late Judge Guy B Findley burned yesterday afternoon. Firemen said the 20 by 3 foot structure could sleep 35 campers and only the fireplace and some timbers remained. The land is city owned with Findley’s widow retaining lifetime use.

Partial walkout by controllers slows Hopkins and airports

Air Traffic Control Center at Oberlin reported a morning strike with 30 of 150 controllers absent. FAA limited Cleveland area flights to one every ten minutes into New York as PATCO protest over pay and modernization constrains operations at Hopkins and surrounding airports.

Nixon seeks stiffer penalties for fatal bombing crimes

President Nixon announced plans to push federal legislation imposing the death penalty when a bombing results in a death. The proposals would stiffen penalties for transporting or receiving explosives, make incendiary devices count as explosives, and criminalize possession of explosives in federal buildings. The measures call for up to 20 years or a $20,000 fine for injuries, and up to five years or $5,000 for bomb threats.

County approves courthouse pact for Middle Avenue site

Flames burn three cars near Apollo 13 launch pad

Three security cars caught fire near the Saturn 5 moon rocket at Cape Kennedy as oxygen vapor vented during fueling. The drivers escaped without injury, two cars were total losses and one badly burned, while launch operations paused momentarily.
