Kickback system snags tag reforms
Deputy registrars are told that party contributions are expected upon appointment though no fixed rate is stated. In practice the local party shares between five and all per cent of the 50 cent tag fee, with further claims that service clubs pay the franchise tax and profit from deputies acting as fronts. The issue ties to a proposed mid-year appointment bill and a raised fee to one dollar, now blocked in the Senate amid partisan resistance to funding opposition groups.

Fitzsimmons calls trucker locals to back wage offer
Chicago dispatch reports Teamsters Union President Frank E. Fitzsimmons summoned nearly 1,000 local leaders to a hotel conference in Arlington Heights to back new wage proposals for a national freight contract covering 40,000 drivers. He blasted Trucker Employers Inc. for a skimpy 13 percent raise plan, seeking 2.50 per hour over three years plus expanded welfare and pension contributions and no cap on future COL raises. Both sides remained hopeful of a settlement before the March strike deadline.
