One third of major urban roads need repair study says
Washington AP reports a Road Information Program study funded mainly by highway interests finds one third of major urban road miles in the 50 largest metros are poor or mediocre and cost drivers about 142 dollars annually in wear. The report cites higher fuel use and tire costs. The group notes a hidden tax on motorists from substandard roads while lawmakers weigh gas tax relief. The study uses Federal Highway Administration data covering 850000 urban miles, about 61 percent of yearly driving. The STPP counters that states often spend federal funds on lower grade roads and urges more transit funding and road repair accountability.
