Northeast Ohio families cope as spring snow dumps across region

Rivera urges firing of spray incident officer

Lorain Police Chief Del Rivera recommends firing Officer James E. Wolford after he sprayed a handcuffed prisoner with pepper spray. Rivera calls the action callous and inhumane and notes the prisoner posed no threat. Wolford, 27, pleaded not guilty to federal civil rights charges from the Aug 20 incident.

Jalowiec reacts to murder verdict with religious joy

Elyria resident Stanley Jalowiec smirked after jurors convicted him in the two year old murder of a police informant. He said the Lord calls believers to find joy in trials. His mother cried in the courtroom and declined to speak to reporters.

Schools sue to block Elyria school closings

A residents group filed in Common Pleas Court to halt the planned closings of Elyria West High School and Spring Valley and Jefferson elementary schools. They urge preliminary and permanent injunctions to stop the actions, claiming the closings are meant to force annexation of Elyria Township land by the city. District officials say expansion of Elyria West is intended for a consolidated high school, with city annexation also a possible goal.

The Keys to Ross Victory in Lorain County Race

Ross won the Lorain area contest by 1989 votes over Stern and expanded a 585 vote edge over Rothgery. He secured the Democratic nomination for the county commission seat after defeating Phil Stern and unifying key party activists in Lorain.
