Firefighter jailed after mass contempt trials in Kansas City

Roy Campbell, among more than 60 striking firefighters, left for a 20 day term at a minimum security work farm after finding a substitute Sunday school teacher. The strike by Local 42 of the IAFF led to criminal contempt convictions for about 70 of 850 fire fighters, with fines and fees over 600 dollars each. Judge Laurence Smith defended mass hearings to speed convictions, while union attorneys attacked the process as harsh. The city’s second walkout in three months follows a December slowdown and a dispute over rehiring 42 dismissed workers.
