Washington officials question Moscow sincerity as peace overtures rise but concrete moves lag. They note softer Soviet rhetoric after Britain protest and urge a formal gesture such as calling off Korea, with Malenkov or other leaders needed to prompt U S steps.
The concluding Sunday evening Lenten union service in Elyria features Rev. David Loegler of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio. The 8 p.m. event at First Methodist Church includes local clergy, special music, and choir-led congregational singing. Public invited.
County Commissioner Norman Thompson unveiled sketch plans for a $40,000 project to add a residence for the superintendent and matron, juvenile detention space for five boys and five girls, plus dormitory room for about 15 invalid cases. Funds total $40,000 from existing accounts without a levy.
Sentencing of Minot F. Jelke for inducing girls into prostitution was postponed for one week at the request of the probation department. The case centers on Jelke's involvement with teenage girls and alleged sexual exploitation in New York.
Northeastern Ohio forecast shows a high near 55 this afternoon with partly cloudy skies and a warmer tonight 38. Saturday brings a high around 53 with mostly cloudy skies and chances of showers. The five day outlook calls for temperatures 6 to 8 degrees above normal, with a 1 inch precipitation average, cooler Sunday and warmer Tuesday.
Owen Carlton vice president of the Central National Bank Cleveland spoke at the Center For Sightless annual meeting at the American Legion hall. He described travels abroad, noted English widely spoken, and highlighted international trade with South American products. He urged friendship among nations and quoted Omar Bradley. The event included music, remarks, and the election of directors for the next three years.
Records show 28 men sent to Cleveland for pre induction physicals on March 11. Twenty were accepted. thirteen from this board, eight accepted four rejected and one undetermined. The remaining 15 men were transferred from other boards, with twelve accepted and three rejected.
CIO United Auto Workers said 725 workers at the Borg-Warner jet parts plant in Wooster threaten a work stoppage after fruitless wage negotiations. Company officials were unavailable for comment.

Early today a four story Chestnut Apartment Hotel blaze in Chicago's near north side killed five people including a baby. Fire Commissioner Michael Corrigan said arson is suspected and ordered an immediate investigation as smoke and flames sent about 150 residents fleeing in their night clothes. At least 11 were injured with one other baby believed among them.
The Elyria Jaycees announce the second annual scrap and paper drive set for April 11 and 12. Sid Sprague chairs the drive with Chuck Slusher Dick Lugshat Leon Altfeld Ray Snyder Cole Christian Mike Rubin guiding committees and Skip Johnson Gordon Carlson Bob Minch Paul Hovey Bob Collins Jack Hultz providing manpower. JayCee-ettes serve refreshments as last year’s funds helped buy the Jaycee clubhouse on Harwood Ave, making Elyria’s Jaycee chapter unique in Ohio. A general meeting of the drive committee is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Wednesday March 25 at the club rooms.
Sandusky reports 35 members of District 50 United Mine Workers ended a week long strike and returned to three Huron fisheries. They accepted a six cent per hour raise originally offered, matching Lorain and Vermilion pay with a top rate of 1.76 per hour.
Ten weeks of careful feeding ended when two dogs from Columbia Station entered the Sweet farm coop and killed 175 pullets. Damages are estimated at about 225 dollars. Vernon Smith fired, killing one dog. the other fled. Dog warden Delfing took the remains and the owners agreed to pay. State law requires farm dogs be tied from sunset to sunrise.
A 1952 white Mohawk Motors truck from Cleveland tipped over at Route 76 crossing in Ridgeville, blocking two New York Central tracks for nearly two hours after the driver swerved to avoid a stopping car. Deputy Sheriff Joseph Grunda reports the trailer hit a warning signal before the vehicle toppled.
Msgr. Alberto Melia di Santella, 72, master of the Papal Chamber, died today after a long illness in Vatican City. He served in the Papal Court for decades, shaping ceremonial duties and state protocol.
The United Nations Security Council failed to agree on a new secretary general after a 5 hour 21 minute secret session. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit of India was rejected with two votes, one against, and eight abstentions. Canada’s Lester B Pearson led with nine votes and one abstention. Brig Gen Carlos Romulo’s US backed bid received five votes. Poland’s Stanislaw Skrzeszewski drew only Russia’s support. The council urged the Big Five to unite on a single candidate and scheduled another session for next Tuesday.
Washington reports GOP leaders denied Rep. Reed’s charge that the party pledged tax cuts this year. House Speaker Martin and Floor Leader Halleck said a July 1 personal income tax cut remains possible if balance is achieved, while Senate Leader Taft argued no promise was made for 1953. Reed withdrew his floor-vote plan and blamed party leaders and Eisenhower for inconsistent pledges on tax relief.
Allied artillery repelled two Chinese probe assaults on Little Noirh Hill near Seoul. Eighty attackers failed to breach rifle range in 35 minutes, then twenty Reds withdrew under shellfire in 15 minutes. The series spans 30 days, targeting T-Bone Hill Hook and other positions.
Lexington Kentucky US basketball coach Adolph Rupp and racketeer Frank Costello along with Ed Curd are named in a federal suit seeking triple damages totaling 573257.78 for gambling losses. plaintiff Mrs Lucille Bradberry claims a fraudulent gambling scheme affected schools colleges and university sports. Rupp calls the allegations a fantastic lie and says the suit cites nonresidents Costello and Curd.
In New London Connecticut 23 sailors were sealed in a submarine for two months as part of Operation Hideout to study the effects of long term confinement. Officials said they were very happy with results but most volunteers said they would not want to repeat the experience citing desire for companionship and normal life above all.
The United States plans 151,000 homes and amenities for U S diplomats in Bonn funded with German counterpart funds. Officials testified the $28 million project will save money as staff shrinks and resale value rises. Amenities include maids quarters, a recreation center, a gas station and a nursery school.
State Senator Jean Boucher proposed a witty plan to tax air, telling the taxation committee to put little meters in throats to tax breathing. The notice also greets Bradley's Restaurant now open across from E S T Bank at the corner of Ibbe and Cleveland.
