Eddie Savoy long serving chief messenger to state dept
On March 17 1933 President Roosevelt sent a White House car to pick up Eddie Savoy the diminutive Black man who served 64 years in federal service as chief messenger to the secretary of state and keeper of the secretary’s door. He entered federal work at 14 and retired at 77 after serving 22 secretaries of state. Savoy aided diplomats including Ramsay MacDonald and Arthur Balfour, and World War I departure notices to Austrian diplomats. He was officially retired in 1931 but kept as a personal employee, and was honored posthumously when a Liberty Ship was named for him.
