Lobbyist Dita Beard, hospitalized in Denver, swore the memo attributed to her by columnist Jack Anderson is a forgery and a hoax. Anderson says Beard previously acknowledged the memo as authentic and reviewed it with Brit Hume, while Beard denies knowing who forged or distributed it.
An Oberlin man suffers injuries including a fractured left leg when his car leaves Abbe Road, slides through a drainage ditch about 85 feet, and hits a utility pole, snapping it in two. Police report indicate southbound vehicle struck the pole after leaving roadway.
About 150 inmates at Walpole State Prison burned the library and smashed windows and furniture after a black inmate was stabbed. A racial overtones claim surfaced as 100 state troopers responded. by 3 a.m. all prisoners were back in cells and the stabbed man, Ronald Stokes, was in fair condition after surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
