Automakers pledge automatic braking standard time frame
Washington officials and 20 carmakers agreed to make automatic braking standard in most cars and light trucks within six years and in heavier SUVs and pickups within eight years. The pact speeds safety rollout versus potential mandatory rules, though critics seek enforceable regulation. Automatic braking uses sensors to slow or stop when drivers fail to react, aiming to cut rear end crashes, with 1.7 million such crashes annually and substantial fatalities and injuries.

Federal proposal tightens rules for U S gas pipelines
U S officials move to strengthen safety rules for the natural gas transmission network, expanding inspections and pressure testing to older and rural lines, including a 1970s PG&E pipe linked to the 2010 San Bruno blast. Automatic shutoff valves are not mandated, facing industry resistance. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx says measures address rising production and pipeline demands.
