Elyria Mayor Holly Brinda says residents should be patient as the income tax increase boosts city coffers while a permanent 2016 budget proposes nearly 2 million in reductions from 2015. She plans case by case spending reviews, hiring freezes, and avoids big purchases while parks and police needs await evaluation.
The Police Department received a grant from the Community Foundation of Lorain County to create a joint recruitment plan with the city of Lorain, Elyria NAACP, and Lorain County Urban League. Brinda said the goal is to expand Civil Service eligibility and improve hiring lists for lateral transfers and new recruits while prioritizing safety. Road resurfacing will proceed this year, but cautiously to ensure underlying work is solid and streets are not torn up again.
In Elyria the giant excavator moved Friday to demolish the last brick structures of the long shuttered General Industries site at Olive and Taylor. Once a 12-building complex, the former plant faced a 2008 fire and years of neglect before redevelopment moves started amid hopes for new city revenue from a recent income tax increase. Local resident Tawna Strawderman welcomed the change, calling the site an eyesore finally addressed.
Avon Middle School announces Melissa Linebrink as the new spelling bee winner, with 13 year old Rachel Mueller from Learwood Middle School in Avon Lake taking district honors. Emma Mueller says the mismatched socks were lucky, as Rachel placed third in the March 11 preliminary round behind Andy Hoffman of Avon's Holy Trinity.
