Washington reported a 1 percent rise in February consumer prices the sharpest in two years, driven by severe winter weather lowering food supplies. Food costs jumped 2 percent with fresh vegetables up a record 20.9 percent, while gasoline and fuels also rose, signaling inflation concerns for 1977.
Snow and rain and winds disrupted Lorain County causing 15 000 homes to lose power and basement flooding in several communities. Ohio Edison blamed a worn 69 000 volt line and a flashover as the cause with outages lasting up to two hours in parts of Amherst Wakeman South Amherst Oberlin and Kipton. Power was restored by 1 30 a m. The storm also dumped about 1.5 inches of precipitation with thunder and lightning.
Two Amherst police officers Lt. William Hall Jr. and Patrolman David Pawley traveled to Las Vegas earlier this week to obtain a key statement for a Special grand jury and are now financially stuck, paying the 640 cost of the trip out of their own pockets.
In Brook Park the Blue Water Seafood Co. plant saw a third fumes incident in three years as 36 workers were treated at two hospitals and released.
