Cost of GIS Inmate Care Put at 1839 Per Year
The Ohio Welfare Department said the annual cost to keep one girl at the Girls Industrial School was 1839 not 3514 as a state auditor claimed. Chief Waidner attributed the higher figure to capital investments and building costs, noting 273000 for a new Riverside Cottage replacement and a rebuilt bakery. The department cited rising living costs and salary increases since 1943, with projected 1954 costs around 1870 per inmate. The auditor’s preliminary report had listed 3514 per capita for the current year.
