Rail Rates Approved to Handle U S Mail Increase 10 Percent
The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a 10 percent rise in railroad mail handling rates, effective April 1, raising annual revenue by about 32.5 million dollars. A retroactive payment of roughly 16.5 million will be paid to 121 railroads for October last year through this month, with two carriers receiving retroactive payments only to December 21. The ICC noted mail diversion to trucks and airlines as a key factor, and that post office accepted the 10 percent hike after reviewing costs.
