Washington March 16 The House agreed to consider Senate amendments to the 300 million economy bill. The measure would give Roosevelt broad power to cut veterans benefits and shrink federal payrolls to help balance the budget. If needed, a conference would be called to resolve changes before final enactment.
Roosevelt proves an action oriented leader as he drives early policies. He lunches at his desk, issues concise messages to Congress, and demands executive economies while maintaining a steady good humor in the White House.
Mostly cloudy tonight with light rain and snow flurries near Lake Erie. Cooler tonight and Friday with light rain expected in the southern portion and Friday afternoon.
The Senate was to pass a Bulkley amendment to the Roosevelt Emergency Banking Act allowing state banks to borrow from the RFC by selling capital notes and debentures instead of common stock. Ohio law currently blocks this as it restricts to common stock only. The change aims to broaden borrowing power for state banks.

A large Elyrian delegation will attend a presentation by Thomas Ryan of the Cleveland Retail Merchants Board at Amherst Town Hall at 8 p m to learn how proposed sales tax legislation could affect Lorain County businesses and consumers. Merchants and buyers from across the county are expected.
The Ohio House approved Rep. J J Gilbert's bill to extend county recorder terms to four years starting November 1935. Current recorders would serve until January 1937, with new terms beginning then. the measure, described as an economy move, goes to the Senate.
The Senate began debate on the 8.2 percent beer and wine bill and adopted a Finance Committee amendment adding wine and fruit juices to legalized beverages. House already voted to legalize beer. opposition to wine and juice limits persists. The measure aims to raise 150 to 200 million dollars for the budget and would set a five dollar per barrel tax.
James A. Hewitt, former Elyria mayor, was named chairman of the County Relief Commission at its organization meeting. The panel, joined by state relief officials, faces March funding needs for Elyria, Amherst township, and Sheffield township totaling about 6,800 dollars and plans a special meeting to discuss relief for April and bonds. The five member panel includes L A Fauver, Morton Houghton, August Nabakowski, and L A Bradstock.
Fred Ross, contractor, said the Water Street sewer ejector station project will start early next week after a $19,091 contract award. The work was delayed by local banking conditions but is expected to proceed despite them.
The Union Trust Company, Cleveland's second largest bank, advances plans with the Treasury and Federal Reserve involved. Guardian and dozens of Ohio banks have reserves tied to Union Trust, as officials agree on forming a new national bank and liquidating parts of the old Trust structure.

House Democratic leaders plan to push Roosevelt farm relief through quickly. Majority Leader Burns said the bill would go to the agriculture committee immediately after the president’s message, then be reported under a special rule allowing no amendments.
Martins Ferry report of a gas explosion that destroyed a home killed Mrs. Zelma Yeager, 36, and her twins. A third daughter, 3, Eileen, was burned critically. The house was destroyed.
Announcement in Elyria church reports Rev Edward J Murphy of Cleveland named assistant pastor at St Marys. He was ordained last Saturday marking entry into active ministry. Addressed by Bishop McFadden and Father Blair, the event drew over 500 guests, with a reception in the church hall after the mass.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved favorable reports for two ambassadorial nominations Josephus Daniels to Mexico and Jesse Straus to France while postponing action on Robert Worth Bingham for London. Daniels is from North Carolina and Straus from New York.
In Lorain Sam Lasovich faced manslaughter charges for the death of his landlady Angeline Kuma last Christmas. Jurors reported a 10 to 2 vote for acquittal after four hours of deliberation before Judge W. B. Thompson discharged them. Lasovich remained jailed as a retrial is eyed, with talks he may plead guilty to assault and battery to end the case. he had claimed self defense after a fracas that left Kuma dead.
Oral arguments were heard in Columbus and Dayton cases tied to the Columbus Gas and Electric Company and eight Ohio communities. The Utilities Commission set a 39 cent wholesale rate, prompting refunds to Dayton customers if the high court upholds it, with a decision expected by May 1. Communities affected include Washington C. H., Sidney, Troy, Tippecanoe City, North Hampton, South Charleston, Wilberforce and an area outside Troy.
Washington officials said France paying its 20 million dollar defaulted war debt installment would be doubly welcome to the United States. The State Department noted no diplomatic assurance and tied the payment to possible broader talks on revising France's 34 billion dollar war debt.
Eighteen men evacuated as Tusca River floodwaters reached New Philadelphia area near the gar farm southeast of town. Settlers rescued livestock including 200 chickens and pigs after coops washed away.
