An Associated Press exclusive will examine serious defects in Lorain County s Civil Defense plan. A Chronicle Telegram study finds 35 county shelters poorly marked, often locked, and lacking basic supplies.
Senate Democrat Leader Mike Mansfield said the United States had halted B52 bombing of the Plain of Jars in Laos and that the administration would not resume. He noted other American aircraft missions continue in support of Royal Lao forces defending the region against North Vietnamese invasion.
Soviet officials rejected rumors of a preemptive strike against China as anti communist propaganda aimed at souring Sino Soviet border talks. Meanwhile in Laos North Vietnamese troops massed south of the Plain of Jars, threatening Sam Thong base, with reports of Lao counterattacks and civilian casualties near the Thai border.
Akron Mayor John Ballard was jailed in La Princesa for two hours in San Juan over a restaurant bill paid by check. He was released at 8 a.m. after bail of 3000 dollars arranged by San Juan Mayor Carlos Romero Barcelo. Ballard said it was a misunderstanding as he lacked cash. Ballard and 20 other US mayors are attending a three day model cities conference.
Eleven students from Jacksonville Ribault High went on a haunted house outing that ended in terror when two armed men entered a vacant house. They forced money from the youths, abducted two girls aged 17 and 18, and later harmed them at a second empty home joined by three others.
Israeli commandos breached the Suez Canal on a two mile front near El Kaf Ettina and El Quantara and destroyed four Egyptian frontline positions. Eight Egyptian soldiers were counted dead with heavy losses claimed by Cairo while Israel reported two killed and four wounded.
A wry remark notes that modern life makes necessities feel luxurious while luxuries seem essential, reflecting a paradox of contemporary priorities.
Apollo 13 commander James A. Lovell says the two ships for his final moon voyage will be Aquarius and Odyssey. He calls Apollo 13 his graduation and aims for a desk job after the mission, which launches April 11. Teammates Fred Haise and Thomas Mattingly join the conference, with Haise slated to land on the moon.
Snow and rain created icy highways as drivers slid into ditches and some injuries were reported. Police redirected crashes to more serious incidents while salt crews struggled to keep roads clear. Troy Police charged Earl E. Lewis 25 with arson in a million dollar blaze at Uliman Department Store and an adjoining building. He faces 10 burglary counts as deputies recovered items from stores burglarized recently and a search of his home. His wife was charged with receiving stolen goods.
