Two RAF Bombers Die In Welsh And Lincoln Crashes

Two Royal Air Force bombers on training flights crashed in Wales and Lincolnshire today, killing 11 crewmen and injuring one survivor. One plane went down 2000 feet up Carneed Llewellyn in Wales. four bodies were found in the northern mountains, with three crew missing. The other crash occurred at Hemswell near Lincoln before dawn, killing five and injuring one. Both aircraft were on training missions in separate incidents.

Red Cross Drive Workers to Report for Luncheon

Elyria chapter plans the 1950 Red Cross membership and fund drive luncheon at the YMCA with campaign chair Bert Meister urging divisions to report on solicitations and collections. The local goal is 30000, supporting veterans services, first aid, water safety, home nursing, and clothing production, with part of funds aiding national disaster relief.

Dr C B Hess Plans Jun Retirement As At Elyria Home Head

Dr C B Hess longtime Elyria Home for the Aged superintendent announced Tuesday he will retire during the June Methodist Conference after 11 years in the post and more than 32 years in ministry. He served Central M E Church Mansfield First Church Lorain Massillon and led Lorain church reconstruction after the 1924 tornado. He will stay in Elyria with no definite plans yet.

VA to Close Elyria Contact Office amending April 7 1950

The Veterans Administration announced the Elyria VA contact office will close effective April 7, 1950 to cut expenditures. Inquiries on benefits will shift to Lorain, with Charles B. Coen becoming officer in charge there on April 10. Arline Cook moves to Lorain along with trainee personnel headquarters. Paul Kilfoyle will transfer to Sandusky.

Township Trustees Hear Talks By Health Officials

Lorain county township trustees and clerks heard talks on county health department services administration and finance at the Kipton town hall meeting last night. Speakers included Dr. Marion Fisher health commissioner Dr. W R Morrison health board member and Russell Franklin sanitarian.

Addition To Be Built To School Avon Board Ad approves six room addition

Avon Board of Education accepted the resignation of Chris Koppenhafer effective at the end of the school year. Koppenhafer has served as head basketball coach and industrial arts instructor for two years. The board approved plans for a six room addition and scheduled bid opening for April 19, with the next meeting set for March 27.

Grand Jury Studies Bookie Operations in Lorain

The Lorain grand jury, in the final stage of its session, probes gambling and bookie activity in Lorain and vicinity. Police Chief Paul Cleaver testified on gambling conditions. editor Jack Lavriha of the Lorain Sunday News said he would provide names and addresses if asked. Wakeman Mayor Schultz dies suddenly at 57

Charles H. Schultz 57 longtime Wakeman mayor died at his Main Street business last night around 10. He had battled ill health but death came unexpectedly. Born Elyria February 22 1893 he moved to Wakeman in 1897 later running Schultz Restaurant and Confectionery. He was active in Masons Norwalk and Al Koran Shrine. Survived by wife Alta son Wayne and sister Mrs J L Walters. Burial with Masonic graveside rites set at Wakeman Cemetery after a Friday service.

Plans To Improve The Y M C A Building At Meeting Elyria

A report on the state of the Elyria Y M C A was presented to members and citizens. William Chambers described the Y M C A as developing everyday Christian living and preventing delinquency, with a fully democratic, community linked structure. Nine-year-old Girl Resists Ex-con Cousin in Babysitter Slaying

In Saint Joseph Missouri a nine year old girl Patsy Speer tried to grab a pistol from her enraged ex convict cousin as he shot Caryl Johnson 15 while babysitting Patsy and seven siblings. Johnson died after five bullets hit her in the head and neck. Speer surrendered to police an hour after the attack.

X-Ray Mobile Unit Returns for Elyria Survey

Lotain County’s X-ray mobile unit, funded by the Christmas seal drive, will conduct its monthly street survey in Elyria tomorrow. It will be at Broad Street at Ely Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last month 134 residents used the service, and 250 X-rays have been taken in the county since January first.

Ohio Jaycees to Meet in Columbus for Final State Session

About 600 members of the 110 Junior Chambers of Commerce of Ohio are expected in Columbus Saturday and Sunday for the final all-state meeting of the year, state president William A. Keslar said.
