Maine Indian land claims settled for 81.5 million
An out of court agreement ends a suit by the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy tribes over 12.5 million acres claimed to have been taken in Maine. The deal includes a $27 million permanent trust and a $54.4 million fund for a 261,960 acre land base, with no state funds. A tribal referendum March 15 could ratify the accord and clear titles.
