Former civil rights reformer fatally shot in New York
Allard K Lowenstein a 51 year old former congressman and civil rights leader was shot after meeting a man in New York late Friday. The suspect Dennis Sweeney 37 a part time carpenter from New London Conn was taken to Bellevue Hospital for psychiatric examination. Lowenstein died after five hours of surgery at St Clare's Hospital. The shooting followed a 4 pm appointment to discuss a lawsuit involving Sweeney's family.
