Man shoots two cops and kills self in domestic dispute
Bay View resident Hershel A. Hayes, 54, shot at Bay View police while escorting a family from his home on Barrett Road. He wounded Officers Ronald Cox and James Cherry, then killed himself with a 32 caliber pistol. The officers were treated and released. Cherry remained in stable condition. The incident began after Hayes tried to force a police cruiser off the road, struck a guard rail, then fired multiple shots at the officers. Hayes was found dead at his home on Grand Pass with deputies surrounding the residence. The domestic dispute trigger remains under investigation by the Erie County Sheriff's Department.
