Bob Emary and Carol Russell earned Chronicle-Telegram Bowler of the Week honors for the seven day period ending Sunday night. Emary rolled a 300 in the Oberlin Classic and a 726 series combining the perfect game with high scores, while Russell produced a 654 series and a 235 single game to lead the women.
Jan Porrelli led Ridge Rec Rollers with a 598 and a 203 game in Center Ridge league for a one pin edge over Armen da Myrick who scored 597 across 231 176 190 in Lake Erie Ladies at Center Ridge. Karen Roddy posted 582 and Diane Long 586 while Jeanie Duelley had 577 as Spotlight scores in the A M Ladies League with several high single games from Ruth Collins Marge Perkins Peggy Callahan and Grace Gannon at Center Ridge.
Northfield harness racing notes Whistle Stop drives to a third consecutive victory in the fifth race. James Brassett piloted the 3 year old colt who trailed early then sprinted clear in the stretch to prevail over rivals.
Ron Brown led a quality evening with a 692 in the Thursday Nite Late Men's League at Center Ridge, with 254 and 239 games and a 892 total. Other notable scores included Dick Bowser 680, Dave McConnell 641, and Fred Blinn 637 in the same league, plus Elks and Legion league 618s and several 600 Club entries. The program also featured a Big Triple win by Billy Evans, late-race exactas, and substantial payouts, with overall attendance at 2,541 and handle of 499,903.
Brookside captured the overall team trophy at the Lake land Conference Bowling Tournament held at Redman's Lanes. Shawn Pope of Wellington won the men's individual honors with a 614 series and Ronda Federico of Brookside topped the women with 532 while Brookside also took the women's division.
Scott says the winner will be the more consistent team over four quarters and in the final two minutes. Oberlin faces Firelands' Bill Szabo, with emphasis on shutting down Carrico and Muschitz as the keys to victory.
Illinois and Minnesota advance to the NIT semifinals in New York after narrow wins. Minnesota crushed Southwestern Louisiana 94-73 with Trent Tucker and Randy Breuer each scoring 18, while Illinois edged Murray State 65-63 as Perry Range and Reno Gray led with 16 points apiece.
The Olmsted Falls Wrestling Tournament has filled its field of 300 entries with no more applications accepted. Weigh-ins on March 21 will not accept registrations. The report lists numerous match results from Oberlin to Brooklyn and Vermilion including several overtimes and close scores.
The 6th annual Lorain County Wrestling Tournament sponsored by Oberlin Kiwanis will be held March 22-23 at Oberlin High School. Four divisions compete over two days with weigh-ins from 9 to 10 am and matches starting at 11 am under Ohio prep rules. Entry forms available from high school coaches or the Kiwanis Club.
Lorain Catholic claims the leagues top two honors with Cheri Batista named Most Valuable Player and Micki Tubbs awarded Coach of the Year. Batista averaged 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead a 17-4 Spartans club that won the ECC title, with Claire Batista joining the all league team.
