Elyria voters may face a three year operating levy to keep city schools open through 1980. The board proposed the measure at a Monday work session with formal approval due next week. If approved, a 6 mill levy is likely, alongside about $1 million in 1978 cuts to staff and services. Even with cuts a $948,000 deficit remains offset by closing schools at year end.
Bargainers for the United Mine Workers and coal industry prepare to resume top level talks in Washington amid reports negotiators are close to a settlement ending the 99 day strike. An industry source says lower level teams reviewed draft terms for main negotiators. If work is right, a deal could emerge today.
