Massive cleanup costs prompt EPA rethink of Superfund efforts

Washington AP reports a sweeping 50 year cleanup effort for US toxic waste sites could cost about 100 billion dollars, far above prior projections. The Office of Technology Assessment urges focusing first on preventing further harm at priority sites while boosting tech and data, with only 6 sites declared clean to date. EPA cites 22,000 potential sites and a priority list of 2,200, as GAO warns cleanup costs may reach beyond 39 billion.

Taxi cabs Thrive in Elyria With Two Firms

Elyria hosts two taxicab firms Graham's Elyria Taxi Inc and Silver Cab Service Inc moved into the market last May replacing Yellow Cab Co. Each firm reports brisk business with 12 cabs and 18 drivers at Graham's averaging 350 runs daily and peaking at 600. Silver Cab runs five cabs with eight drivers totaling about 160 runs per day.

Candidates seek running options after Lorain error

Water shutoff sparks suit against Colonial Oaks park owners

In April 1962 Elyria turned off water to 315 Colonial Oaks residents for 40 minutes over delinquent bills. The city later sued the park owners to recover 153000 in sewer water and garbage charges and asked a receiver be appointed to collect rent if the suit wins. Residents fret over rising rents and deteriorating grounds while officials defend inspections and park status.

Oberlin 14 year old wins Chronicle Telegram spelling bee

David Carlton a Langston Middle School eighth grader in Oberlin finished first among 157 contestants in the Chronicle Telegram written spelling bee at Lorain County Community College with a 76. His multilingual training and family support helped him on paper though he later faltered in oral spelling on the word addressable. His mother Claudine Carlton notes he has long been strong at spelling.
