President Roosevelt urged rapid congressional action on judiciary reorganization to defend the constitution and curb court overreach. President Roosevelt criticizes the Supreme Court as a policy making body and calls for action to protect democracy. Mrs Ada Forbes Van der Pyl wife of Rev Nicholas Van der Pyl dies after a two year illness. Funeral services set for 2 30 p m Thursday at The First Church Oberlin pastor Dr James A Nichards to officiate. Survived by husband five children Lyman Milton Van der Pyl Elis Cupler Van der Pyl Telon Russell Lowdon Van der Pyl and five grandchildren. Body moved to Nedgeman Funeral Home prior to services.
Frank Maknich a 40 year old cafe operator was killed while trying to stop a payroll funds robbery in Cleveland Ohio. A bandit escaped in a coupe with a confederate Frank McCullough Otis Steel plant lieutenant fired six shots wounding one. Mrs Mary Maknich described the attacker who also shot John Visvek a boarder as her husband tried to defend himself with a shotgun.
Idaho Senator Borah led foes of President Roosevelt’s court expansion plan against Attorney General Homer S. Cummings as he urged prompt Senate Judiciary Committee action. Cummings warned against delays, arguing for constitutional justifications and the need for new justices to avoid split decisions, while Borah pressed for amendments and challenged the plan’s viability amid potential split rulings.
County Old Age Pension Administrator William France announced plans this week to relocate the office from two rooms in the Masonic Temple. With the addition of Mrs. F.E. G. Mathews to the staff, the investigators rose to five and assistants to two. The new quarters may be four rooms on the fourth floor of the Masonic Temple or a suite in the Elyria block.
Pittsburgh voters or workers reject today a 104 proposal under which Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation's company union would affiliate with the American Federation of Labor. Company union leaders meeting with John P. Frey called the craft union plan inapplicable to the steel industry and said the employer representation plan would stay intact separate from the company unions.
Three WPA workers died at the Philadelphia Navy Yard when caught beneath a traveling crane boom. The crane operator was hysterical, police could not obtain his account. Naval officials were matching victims to WPA records, but identities would take time to confirm.
An unidentified Spanish airplane dropped five bombs on the French passenger freight ship Djebel Antar near Marseilles. One bomb pierced the deck into the engine room but did not explode. The ship departed Rone Algeria for Marsvilles and was expected to arrive tonight.
New York report states Max Schmeling offered James J. Braddock a $250,000 guarantee placed in a bank in a neutral European country to defend the heavyweight title this summer in Berlin.
CHICAGO March 10 Wheat prices rose early then slipped slightly on profit taking, while abroad news kept a steady tone. At the close of the first hour wheat rose 178 to 242 cents, corn gained 8 to 11-8 cents, and oats edged up 7-8 to 1 cent.
The U S Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction of Tommy Touhy who was sentenced to 23 years in Leavenworth prison for mail robbery. The ruling was issued in Saint Louis on March 10.
County commissioners yesterday appropriated 800 to hire a woman probation officer for the juvenile court. Probate Judge Horace H. Nye urged the need, noting only Will iam Oldham currently serves. Numerous women’s groups had petitioned for a female officer, and Judge Nye said the appointment would be made as soon as possible.
Chicago reports a $14,000,000 pay increase by Armour and Company and other leading packing firms. R I Cabell, president, says consumer prices will reflect the boost but stay in line with rising incomes. D J Swanson notes heavy marketing of animals amid feed shortages as the discussion continues on page 2.
A meeting of Lorain County school superintendents and principals is set for tomorrow evening at the Elks Club. Attendance is expected to be good as C A Gibbons Lorain County Superintendent of schools announced. RK N Dietrich assistant director of education of the state of Ohio and C W Howell high school supervisor will be present.
At Hiram College Hayden Hall on March 10 delegates to a mock constitutional convention defeated a proposed amendment to change the United States Supreme Court by a vote of 297 to 97. The event, led by Joan Wallace and Franklin Burton, featured student debates, campus rallies, and a keynote by Dr. Robert K. Custom of Cornell.
William A. Trapp, former Galion city auditor, indicted by Cranford county grand jury on 26 counts of forgery. He confessed to forging checks payable to H. Ray Stiner, Cleveland sanitary engineer, totaling 3873 dollars. arrested January 15.
Gov. Frank Murphy traveled from Florida to Detroit to aid in settling sit down strikes that have left over 75,000 workers idle in the auto industry. Chrysler and Hudson plants were shut, with plans to close several facilities if talks fail. A recent settlement at General Motors precedes the new talks, as unions and management agree on plant access and mail movement during negotiations.
Judge Henry Hu of the Division of Public Assistance will headline a March 17 Elyria High School talk on the new welfare division and child welfare. Miss Doris Fodd arranges the event with other speakers including Miss Esther McClain and William E. Bartram, inviting teachers and groups to learn about services and discuss afterward.
Tax deadline brings crowds to Elyria post office basement tax office. Workers Gorland and Radican process returns from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily with Saturday hours. Cleveland aggregates district totals, so Elyria figures are not separated. Radican notes more Elyrians filing and higher incomes in 1936.
James Ketch, GE field engineer and noted authority on store illumination, will speak at a merchants dinner at St. Pauls Church at 6:00 p.m. Friday. Sponsored by the Elyria Chamber of Commerce retail merchants division, the event is open to merchants and others. Ketch will present working models to illustrate suggestions, per N. M. Fitch, noting the talk will interest store managers, department heads, window trimmers, and others involved in merchandise display.
Dr Carl Watson announces WPA plan to place 500 weather observers across 24 counties in the Muskingum Conservancy district. The project aims to chart wind, rainfall, and flood factors to aid future control efforts and drought predictions. Observers read every 20 minutes from 7 am to 7 pm and report to New Philadelphia.
South Amherst villagers voted yesterday to reject a proposed 17,000 bond issue for a PWA school addition. The measure failed 54 to 10, needing 116 votes or 64 percent to pass for two more classrooms and gym equipment.
The British freighter Laila, six months old and built for 1,590,000, burned within an hour at a Charleston pier in Boston. A general alarm fire triggered explosions, injuring two firefighters and threatening the blaze’s spread to waterfront property. Fireboats and crews from across the metro area fought the blaze near Bunker Hill as the hulk listed and risked sinking.
Pablo Juan Boo, sole known survivor, told rescuers the freighter s captain was shot during a mutiny as crew suspected ties to nationalist warships. After the captain s death first mate Franca Maria assumed command and diverted toward Nantes then southeast toward the usual British shipping lane to Portugal. The mutiny arose as the Loya list supply ship reportedly remained afloat with a $2,700,000 cargo of war material burning in hold No 2.
Elyria Elk Lodge No 465 nominates J M Powell city engineer for exalted ruler of Pod at last evening meeting. Other nominations include Gerald M Nau Esteemed Leading Knight Walter B Kohn Loyal Knight Curt Spence Esteemed Lecturing Knight Jack Marshall secretary and O J Jake Shafer trustee. Election set for March 23 at the lodge. Powell would succeed Tom Gorman as ruler.
