Extra week of boot camp unneeded sparks GAO critique

A congressional watchdog group says the Army failed to prove the eight week basic training is necessary. GAO urged a review by Oct 1 and budget submission, noting the added week costs about 40 million in 1982 and 50 million annually thereafter. The Army already added staff to cover the longer program.
